What Should I Expect? |
The walking tour is a fascinating glimpse at Irish life in the 1840's. We will start the tour at the place where the Irish Worked, the B&O railroad yards. A short walk away, we will continue the tour at the Irish Shrine, where you will have the opportunity to explore the narrow alley houses where the Irish workers lived. We will then walk up Poppleton Street to St. Peter's Church, where we will be greeted and be given information on the history of the church. The tour will stop for a quick lunch at the Hollins Street Market or at Patrick's of Pratt Street, a local Irish pub. After lunch, we will wind up our day with a visit to St. Peter's Cemetery. For more information on the Irish Shrine and the surrounding area, click here.
How Long is the Tour? |
The tour is broken into two parts, plus an optional lunch at Patrick's Pub. The first half of the tour takes about 1.5 hours. After a 45 minute lunch break, the second half of the tour goes to St. Peter's Cemetery, which is about a 15 minute drive from the B&O Railroad Museum. After a short introduction to the cemetery, you will have an opportunity to explore the grounds on your own. You may leave at any point during the tour.
